NB2010: Friends and Fam’s Reactions to Going Natural
Hey everyone! This is New Beginnings 2010 with my second post, and I’ve gotten very different reactions about my decision to go natural. Some just look at me and shake their heads because they don’t believe me. I mean, I have been relaxed since I was 10. I barely even believe that my hair texture could be anything but straight. I know, sounds crazy right? I mean I was born with 4b hair (well, not literally because of baby hair, but you know what I mean), and I can hardly believe it’s ever been anything but type 1! Baby pictures don’t lie though:
Yes, that’s baby me! My mom didn’t really know what to do with my hair without a hot comb, but she’s always had a hair texture that’s easier to style. Speaking of mom, I haven’t really talked to her about the natural thing…mainly because she has had previous negative reactions to certain styles, like box plaits. Yes, apparently she thinks their “ghetto.” I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s true. And because I know my mother, I know that if I tell her I’m going natural, she will say something about working with white people and blah, blah, blah. She is going natural right now, too, but it’s supposed to be okay because she is retiring! Whatever, I’m not stressing.
On a more positive note, me and my godsister had a long talk about going natural. She, as well as LeAnne, believes that being natural doesn’t scare or appall people as much as some people think it does. She is extremely excited for me and she can’t wait to hear about my experiences with the transitioning journey. She did the BC at about 12 weeks, so she wants to hear the gory details about the difficulties of transitioning.
My godmother feels that my husband won’t be as freaked as he thinks he will, because her husband was the same way. However, my god-daddy now loves her hair, and he and my husband are quite similar in the fact that they are very stubborn until they see it with their own eyes. Isn’t it strange how something as simple as changing your hair style can be such a big deal?
Anyways, there’s more, but that’s as much as I will go into as far as friends and family opinions. I gave you the most positive and the most negative reactions. Off track, just so I have a before picture here (and you know that I’m not in elementary school as my previous picture presents), here I am!
Hm. I think I really still look the same…
