What to Know If You Want to Become an Esthetician

Whether you enjoy helping others look their best, or are looking for a new career, there are many reasons why you might be interested in becoming an esthetician. However, the path on how to do that isn’t always clear. If you’d like to know how to become an esthetician, here are a few steps you can take.

Where to Start

An esthetician is a skin care specialist, who often works in a spa or salon. The first step in the process of becoming an esthetician is to ensure you meet the basic requirements. Often, an esthetician must be at least 16 years old and have either a GED or high school diploma. After that, you will need to successfully complete an approved program.

Check Your State’s Policies

After you have  entered into a suitable educational program, you will need to get licensed through your state. Specific requirements can vary from state to state, so it can be important to do your homework. However, most states require you to have completed a minimum amount of training hours that include both practical and theoretical courses.

Get Work Experience

After you have found a suitable course and become licensed, it is time to get quality work experience. Many estheticians will need to start out in entry level positions to begin their career. Alternatively,  if you choose to become a certified esthetician it may boost your chances of landing a better job. While certification is not  required, it can be a helpful addition to your resume when looking for a job.

The Bottom Line

Becoming an esthetician can be a rewarding career move for more than one reason. Not only does it tend to take less time than a traditional college degree, but there seems to be a healthy job market for those in the field.

So, whether you would like a career helping others look their best, or simply want to try a career path that won’t take many years and lots of degrees to complete, becoming an esthetician could be the move for you.
