Carly Cushnie (British Jamaican) and Michelle Ochs (Canadian of German-Filipino descent) are Parsons School of Design-graduates. See design school grads show on Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. See them wow the crowd. Cushnie Et Ochs is the collaborative effort of two 24-year-old best friends are the brightest young minds in the industry. Ochs received Parson’s highest honor, the Designer of the Year award while Cushnie came in a close second. Both girls were the sought-after interns of Donna Karan and Proenza Schouler and Chado Ralph Pucci but instead of taking the traditional route and designing under an established name, these ladies ventured out on their own. Cushnie Et Ochs revealed their debut collection at the Spring 2009 season.
Looking at this fall’s show from the pair I can understand all the accolades. While other designers still riding the surge of sterile-rocker chic designers, this look is not quite as androgynous as Alexander Wang and not as minimalist as Calvin Klein. I love how the swaying hemlines, feminine details and girlish bibs exudes this odd merger of Baroque meets the post-apocalypse world. Like space aliens from the past. What do you think?
