I’m sure you saw her face or heard her name in the coverage of the Primetime Emmy Awards that aired last Sunday. Maybe you cannot pronounce her name but you need to know who she is. Here’s the backstory on British star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the co-star on the buzzed about J.J. Abram’s spy drama Undercovers.
Gugu was born Gugulethu Mbatha-Raw to an African father and White mother in Oxford. Her name means Our Pride in Zulu. She is a quadruple threat, acting, singing, playing the saxophone and dancing since her prepubescent years and showcasing her talents in the Dreamscope (a local performance troupe) and at the Oxford Playhouse. Gugu attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and graduated in 2004. Since then she has appeared in played as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet performed through the Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theater. You might have seen her in Bad Girls (UK), Doctor Who and Marple. She is currently making her American debut as the wife of Boris Kodjoe and secret spy in Undercovers-think Mr. and Mrs. Smith with black folks.
