New Product Review: Chapstick True Shimmer lip balm
Chapstick True Shimmer was a truly lackluster.
Read my evolution from a petroleum-laden balm to natural lip moisture heaven.
Thanks again, Total Beauty, for another fabulous product to review.
Chapstick lip balm has been in my life forever. Growing up, I had a skin allergy and sometimes it would spread about my mouth and cheek (it came from licking dry, ashen lips too much). I would use lip balms to moisturize my cracked lips but I had to constantly reapply.
At the time, there weren't many options in regards to lip care; it was Chaptick, Lip Smackers, or Blistex. All of these lip products had the same problem: they were all petroleum-based products and you either had to deal with a product that had a petroleum base or you walk around with a crusty mouth.
As you know from previous posts, any product with petroleum jelly as a base is going to do the exact same thing--make my lips slick for a while, then dry them out, leaving an ugly, waxy white film that crusts up on the sides of your mouth.
Sometimes the gunk can get so heavy, that you could literally peel it off like a snake sheds its skin. Gross!
I like that the Chapstick brand is open to new flavors and forms of the lip chap. I applaud them for expanding their product line to botanical lip chaps. However, I really do feel in this world of natural living it really is a waste to keep manufacturing crude oil-based products. People are cautious about what enters their body and whether or not these products work. Chapstick in-- it's classic formula --does not do anything for my lips. I don't care how much fragrance and glitter you sprinkle over it.
The new True Shimmer line has very cute packaging and luscious scents, but that really doesn't excuse the sub-par product. It did very little to moisturize my lips and I found myself running back to my Alba Botanica Hawa
iian Passion Fruit Nectar or plain Shea butter.
The only one of the True Shimmer balms that I liked was the peppermint because it freshened your breath.
Other than that, I would've rather tossed them all in my garbage.
The amount of money I waste on Chapstick products, I could have easily made my own lip balm for less. And, I could have even made more for friends and family. The Chapstick brand truly needs to evolve. I would not mind spending $2-3 on an all natural lip balm if it was worth the price; I do refuse to spend that money on gussied-up Vaseline.
