Iridescents and Shimmers @ Fashion Week 2009

Beautiful shimmers rocked this season. They added a soft touch of color to what would be an otherwise boring, nude face.Elfin-chic sauntered down the catwalk of Jenny Packham. Models wore fairy-dusted faces with crimped and wispy buns. An ashen purple lip was the perfect accompaniment for Modernist. At Antoni & Alison, a blank canvas was highlighted with a beautiful gold shimmering blush contouring the face. Model, Lakshmi Menon had her beautiful facial structure defined with bronzer, but the artist went a different route with silver metallic eyeshadow.

While these looks may look sensational on the runway, they don't always translate well in real life. How does one really wear vibrant purple lipstick without looking like a space alien terrorist? By toning it down--of course-- and acknowledging the main essence of the style. Here are a few products that can help you adapt this one to your life.

  1. Nars Cream Blush in Goldmember: Start off with a perfectly fresh canvas-- no blemishes, no splotches. Using a triangular sponge, create a large streak right under the Zygomatic bone, Blend the streak from with your first two fingers, rubbing lightly in a zig-zag motion heading towards the mouth. Keep blending until the the line is gone.
  2. mark Earth Face Glow: Use a large fan brush, and go a little wild on the eyes and cheeks. Do not mash the brush into the face, but light run the blush on the temples, eyes and cheeks in a circular motion. The makeup should look connected, but not clown-like. Skip the heavy dark cat-eye liner. Just apply a mascara on the top and bottom lashes, no more than one coat. Add a very neutral gloss for a bit of glam. Groom your eyebrows and you're out the door.
  3. Jane Iredale 24-Karat Gold Dust in Silver: Use a small dome or detail brush to get right into those small corners of the eyes. This look has to be effortlessly chic. Its best to pour a small amount onto a clean plastic plate and shake off any excess. Do not layer on the color with this one or you will risk excessive creasing and flaking. Use an eye primer first and apply foundation all over the eye to make it look natural. Start from the corner of the eye nearest to the nose and make small strokes. Once you get to the center of the eye, stop. Use a clean brush to blend ONLY the color that is already on the lid so they lids look dewy and sparkling.
  4. NYX Goddess of the Night lip gloss with mega shine in Purple Rain. Makky, the lead artist for M.A.C. recommended dusting loose powder over the lips to get the purple shine. However, I think walking into the office with a Cyanosis-inspired face will get everyone talking about you-- in the wrong way. Just swipe this gloss on and go about your merry way. No need to overdo it unless we're talking Hollywood costume.
